Frequently Asked Questions
How do you handle foreign languages?
We offer translation services in a wide range of languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and more.
Our process begins by transcribing and timing the original English audio. We then create a subtitle template, which is sent to professional translators. Once translated, the subtitles are re-imported into our system, ensuring they remain perfectly timed and synced with your video.
The result is accurate, natural-sounding subtitles that are ready for immediate use across your media platforms.
How do I order?
Getting started is easy. Visit our Request a Quote page and tell us a bit about your post-production project. Our team will review your details and follow up quickly so we can get started right away.
What is post-production captioning?
Post-production captioning, also known as offline captioning, is the process of adding captions to pre-recorded video content.
Using your final video file (and script, if available), our team transcribes the audio and formats it into clear, readable captions. Each caption is carefully timed to match the spoken content, ensuring accuracy and a seamless viewing experience. Every project goes through a thorough quality check before delivery.
Who Uses Captioning?
The short answer is: everyone!
Morton Ann Gernsbacher’s 2015 study concluded that captioning on video benefits virtually everyone who watches video – Children, adolescents, college students, adults – with no difference based on hearing status or their native language.
It improves comprehension, attention and memory. Even if you are a hearing person fluent in the language you are hearing, you get the benefit of information in noisy settings, better focus and retention during fast-paced dialogue, or when multitasking.
What is the difference between open and closed captions?
Open captions are permanently embedded into a video, meaning they are always visible and cannot be turned off. This is often referred to as “burned-in” or “hardcoded” captions.
Closed captions, on the other hand, are not permanently displayed. They are included as a separate file or track and can be turned on or off by the viewer using their television or media player settings.
What is the difference between pop-up and roll-up captioning?
Pop-up captions appear on screen as short blocks of text, typically one to two lines at a time. Each caption is precisely timed and placed to match the audio, making this style ideal for post-production captioning. Pop-up captions are carefully positioned so they do not block important visuals or on-screen text.
Roll-up captions display one line at a time, building upward as new lines are added. As the dialogue continues, older lines “roll up” to make room for new ones. This style is commonly used for live captioning, where captions appear in real time as the audio is being transcribed.
How are captions delivered?
We provide caption files that are compatible with a wide range of platforms, including YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, and other web-based media players. These files can be easily uploaded, allowing viewers to toggle captions on or off depending on the platform.
For broadcast television, captions can be accessed through the TV’s closed-caption settings.
